‘What It Means To Be Malaysian?’ showcases heartfelt reflections”

In anticipation of Malaysia’s 66th Independence Day and Malaysia Day, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat presents a thought-provoking production titled “Life Sdn Bhd: What It Means To Be Malaysian?”.

Directed by Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican, this poignant offering promises a candid exploration of Malaysian identity. The show is scheduled from September 1 to 3, 2023, at indicine, klpac.

Varied perspectives as Malaysian

The upcoming production delves into the multifaceted question of what defines a Malaysian. Klpac’s Facebook survey on the topic unveiled diverse responses.

From fond references to “steamy nasi lemak” and familiarity with patriotic anthems like “Keranamu Malaysia,” to quirky attributes like “alternative grammar” for English writing and the joy of abundant public holidays, Malaysians exhibit a broad spectrum of viewpoints.

“Life Sdn Bhd: What It Means To Be Malaysian?” is a continuation of a series born out of the aftermath of the 2003 Dataran Merdeka floods, which disrupted The Actors Studio’s Plaza Putra underground complex.

The series initially began with the same question in 2004, reflecting on the essence of Malaysian identity. Over the years, the series expanded to explore pressing issues like breast cancer, mental health, and human trafficking through unfiltered stories of real people.

Six unique voices

Dato’ Dr. Faridah Merican has curated a cast of six distinctive individuals for “Life Sdn Bhd.” These storytellers—Xavier Chen Wen Xuan, Tin Raman, Melor, Mark Beau de Silva, Shamaine Othman, and Li Yang—each share their unique interpretations of being an Anak Malaysia.

Through the lenses of a playwright, educator, stand-up comedian, actor, and social media strategist, the production aims to evoke a blend of humor and poignancy.

The show is designed to celebrate the essence of Malaysia as it truly is—a portrayal that’s authentic, unvarnished, and even raw at times. Instead of a glossy tourism advertisement, the performance captures the country’s charm replete with imperfections and silver linings.

As the series returns to its inaugural theme three decades later, it offers a chance for introspection, contemplation, and aspiration. With its raw narratives and unedited emotions, the show provides an opportunity for the audience to engage with the essence of being Malaysian.

Having premiered at the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival, the production will once again captivate audiences from September 1 to 3, 2023, coinciding with Malaysia Day celebrations.
