The Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTiC) is set to illuminate its historic facade with TERANG, a dazzling projection mapping spectacle that pays tribute to heritage.

From October 20th to 29th, 34 digital artworks will grace MaTiC’s colonial architecture, merging light and music to create a captivating experience after sunset.

The TERANG projection mapping show is expected to captivate approximately 30,000 spectators during nine evening presentations.

TERANG, themed “Warisan” (Heritage), features the creativity of 13 artists from Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia, alongside 21 local and international university students.

Organised by Filamen, a renowned local new media art collective, the event aims to explore the potential of digital art in cultural and space rejuvenation.

This year’s edition presents 34 one-and-a-half-minute video mapping artworks, each thoughtfully crafted around the theme of “Warisan.” These works honour the rich traditions and cultural roots of the participating artists’ home countries.

Abdul Shakir ‘Grasshopper,’ the organiser and co-founder of Filamen, expressed their mission, “TERANG harnesses the transformative capabilities that bring vitality and allure to these time-honoured architectures. If our audiences depart with a revival interest in our shared heritage, we are halfway to accomplishing our mission.”

Preserving intangible cultural heritage

TERANG had its beginnings with an open call in August 2023, inviting local and international artists, as well as university students specializing in the arts, creative, and new media programmes, to submit their artworks for the 9-day projection mapping exhibition.

A panel of esteemed projection mapping experts across Southeast Asia will judge the works, with prizes awarded accordingly.

The panel of judges comprises Jib from Thailand, Adi Panuntun from Indonesia, Fadjar Kurnia from Indonesia, and Ts.Dr. Jazmi Jamal from ASWARA. To deepen the visitor’s connection with TERANG and the art of projection mapping, a series of complementary digital and on-ground workshops and sharing sessions will be held.
