Chingay: Penang aims for UNESCO intangible heritage recognition

Penang is taking a significant stride towards global recognition as it strives to have its traditional festival, the Penang Chingay, listed as UNESCO’s intangible heritage.

Wong Hon Wai, the state Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman, revealed the ambitious plans and expressed the intent to discuss the UNESCO application with the Department of National Heritage in January.

UNESCO recognition ambitions

Originating from China and now a speciality in Penang, the Chingay Festival has evolved over the years. Initially, it served a specific purpose, such as eliminating diseases in the area.

Over time, the procession transformed into a tourism promotion, recognized as an intangible cultural heritage by the National Heritage Department in 2012

Wong highlighted the possibility of a joint listing with Johor to designate the Chingay Festival as an intangible heritage, drawing parallels with joint listings like George Town and Melaka as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The move reflects Penang’s commitment to preserving and promoting its rich cultural heritage.

Pesta Chingay 2023 festivities

In a press conference at Komtar, Wong announced the eagerly anticipated Pesta Chingay 2023, scheduled for both the island and mainland.

The festivities commence with Butterworth’s Pesta Chingay on December 23, taking the celebration from Bagan Luar to Butterworth Tow Boo Kong from 7 pm to 11.30 pm.

The Chingay celebration on Penang Island is set for December 30, starting from Padang Brown to Light Street, beginning at 7 pm and concluding with a spectacular fireworks display at 11 pm.

The roads to be closed are Jalan Johor, Jalan Penang, Jalan Burma, Jalan Transfer, Jalan Sri Bahari, Jalan Chulia, Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling and Lebuh Light.

Wong emphasized the inclusivity of the events, offering visitors an opportunity to enjoy multicultural dance performances, including traditional Malay and Indian dances.

A total of 45 parade teams are expected to participate in Penang Island’s Pesta Chingay, creating a vibrant and diverse showcase.

The festivities promise an immersive experience with multicultural performances, lively parades, and a diverse range of shows.
