IKAT 2.0, a platform dedicated to preserving Malaysian textile heritage, is bringing its immersive experience to George Town, Penang, from April 27-28.

Titled “Tapestry of Tradition,” the event celebrates the captivating art and craftsmanship of East Coast Batik.

IKAT, short for Immersive Knowledge and Textile, is led by creative studio EDT and presented by Yayasan Hasanah.

Their mission is to deepen public engagement with heritage textiles through technology, collaborations, and immersive experiences.

The Penang edition of IKAT 2.0 focuses on the symbolic significance of the Five Elements (Earth, Water, Fire, Metal, Wood) in Malaysian Batik.

Visitors can embark on a cultural exploration to understand how these elements influence Batik narratives, techniques, and creation.

The event is co-curated by Hanuni Ab Halim, a passionate tie-dye artisan, and Khadijatul Azada, an advocate for cultural heritage preservation. Highlights include:

  • Immersive Pavilion: A 480 sq.ft. gallery showcasing the craftsmanship and cultural expressions of Batik through five narratives.
  • Textile Showcase: An exhibition featuring the artistry and creativity of East Coast Batik, with booths focusing on different aspects of Batik creation.
  • Live Demonstrations & Workshops: Esteemed artisans will demonstrate batik creation techniques and conduct workshops on batik block craft, batik painting, and natural dyeing.
  • Talk Sessions: Experts will share insights on batik motifs and natural dye.
  • Fashion Show: Fashion students from Limkokwing University will present upcycled and innovative Batik fashion collections.

IKAT 2.0 offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity to experience Malaysian heritage textiles through interactive installations, workshops, and presentations.
