Muhibbah Buka Puasa event promotes unity amidst tensions

Senator Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Bin Yusof Rawa took a crucial step towards fostering peace and unity during a tense Ramadan period.

He hosted a “Muhibbah Buka Puasa” event at the Masjid Melayu (Jamek) Lebuh Acheh mosque in George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Religious leaders call for condemnation of extremism

The event served as a platform for religious leaders to denounce extremism and promote interfaith understanding.

Mujahid, who is also the chairman of the mosque and Amanah deputy president, emphasised that all religions should condemn radicalisation and extremism.

He stressed that these ideologies distort religious teachings and lead to violence.

“Malaysia has historically enjoyed peace despite its multiracial and religious makeup,” Mujahid stated.

However, he expressed concern about the recent rise in racial and religious tensions, often fuelled by political agendas and media sensationalisation.

He warned that these factors can create a breeding ground for extremist elements to spread hate among young people.

Event fosters unity among diverse communities

Approximately 150 people from diverse backgrounds attended the buka puasa event, including government officials.

They were joined by Lim Siew Khim, Penang’s executive councillor for social development, Datuk Seri Anwar Fazal, Think City Board and representatives from various faiths.

Foreign nationals were also present, with 18 members of the International Women’s Organisation (IWO) from countries like the US, UK, and Japan joining the gathering.

The event’s focus on unity extended beyond Malaysia’s borders.

Discussions addressed the recent tragedies in Gaza, Rafah, Ukraine, and Sudan, where violence has caused immense suffering.

The gathering highlighted the need for peaceful resolutions to global conflicts.

Mujahid’s initiative serves as a timely reminder of the importance of interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence in a world facing rising tensions.
