Autism Awareness Month is a time to unite as a community,” said Dr. Savitha Dharan, Chief Executive Officer of ParkCity Medical Centre.

“The ‘COLOURS of Life’ event allowed us to celebrate the unique experiences of neurodivergent individuals while showcasing our commitment to inclusivity. Seeing so many families and children participating was truly heartwarming.”

The day offered a variety of activities focused on support, education, and fun.

A key highlight was the parent-sharing session, where families of children with ASD exchanged stories, experiences, and the joys of raising autistic children.

The session was led by Dr. Rajini Sarvananthan, Consultant General and Developmental Paediatrician, and Dr. Khairunnisa binti Mohamad Khalil, Consultant Paediatrician, who offered valuable insights into supporting neurodivergent children.

“Every child with ASD is unique,” explained Dr. Rajini. “Intervention plans must be tailored to their individual strengths and weaknesses.

We work with families to develop strategies that help their child reach their full potential. Family involvement is crucial, and we strive to be a source of support throughout their journey.”

The CDC’s experienced therapists offered free developmental screenings and consultations, providing attendees with immediate and practical advice.

The event also featured a Sensory Play Booth, allowing visitors to experience sensory processing challenges firsthand, fostering empathy for the difficulties faced by many autistic individuals.

The Matching Game booth focused on enhancing preverbal communication skills, an essential step in a child’s language development.

The Mini Bazaar, a celebration of community and craftsmanship, showcased unique products from local vendors, including those run by individuals with autism, highlighting their talents and entrepreneurial spirit.

Additionally, a special art corner in the hospital lobby displayed the exceptional creativity of children with ASD.

“Our upcoming ‘Beyond the Surface’ workshop, launching on May 18th, will provide educators and parents with strategies to support children’s mental health and well-being,” shared Dr. Dharan, highlighting the hospital’s ongoing commitment.

“This reflects our dedication to fostering nurturing environments for holistic child development.”

The “COLOURS of Life” event served as a successful platform for celebrating diversity, raising awareness, and equipping families and the community with valuable resources to support individuals on the autism spectrum.
