Rumah Rakit Maraie: A back-to-nature oasis in Pahang

Imagine waking up to a serene view of the Pahang River, gently swaying on a traditional raft house. Rumah Rakit Maraie in Kampung Padang Rumbia, Pekan, offers this unique experience alongside a floating restaurant and a catfish farm.

The mastermind behind this idyllic getaway is Mohammad Haniff Mohd Rasli, a former civil servant who traded his secure job for the chance to grow his family business.

A daring leap and flourishing business

Three years ago, Haniff returned to Pekan from Penang to help his father expand their existing catfish farm. Recognising the potential for tourism, he decided to go a step further.

“I quit my job in 2021, even though I was nearing retirement,” Haniff explains. Back then, their operation consisted solely of fish cages and a single hut.

Leveraging his university education, Haniff built a website and launched a Facebook page to promote the business.

This digital push proved successful, attracting tourists seeking a nature getaway, especially during the post-lockdown period.

“We cater to people yearning for domestic travel experiences close to nature, like homestays and fishing,” says Haniff.

This strategy has not only benefited Rumah Rakit Maraie but also fostered growth for other small businesses in the village, like grocery stores and boat rentals.

Rumah Rakit Maraie: A thriving family business

Today, Rumah Rakit Maraie offers 13 raft houses and two chalets for rent, ranging from RM200 to RM600 per night.

Guests can also enjoy delicious catfish meals at the floating restaurant, with dishes like Curry Patin and Sambal Patin being customer favourites.

Haniff’s vision extends beyond just tourism. He now manages 90 catfish cages, distributing frozen fish nationwide with the help of a specialised vacuum packing machine.

Their agricultural endeavours don’t stop there. The family also raises chickens and cows, supplying local distributors and the restaurant.

This commitment to agriculture reflects their 11-year legacy in the field.
