The Powering Your Innovation Competition 2024 has crowned Muhammad Ahmed, a Master of Philosophy in Engineering student at the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU), as its champion in the Postgraduate bracket.

His innovative creation, Maviglasses, showcased APU’s leading-edge advancements and underscored its role in fostering technological breakthroughs.

The competition, themed “Towards Digitalisation and Sustainability in Aviation, Aerospace, and Mechanical,” was organised by Global Turbine Asia Sdn Bhd (GTA) as part of the Asia Turbomachinery & Pump Symposium (ATPS), in coordination with the TEES Turbomachinery Laboratory.

Maviglasses, developed by Lotech Solutions—a startup spinoff from APU’s Centre for Research and Development of IoT (CREDIT)—emerged as a testament to the institution’s dedication to innovation.

The vision behind Maviglasses

Maviglasses, a pioneering fusion of Generative AI (Gen-AI) and sensor technology, was initially designed for remote electrical pre-inspection.

The AI-driven sensors facilitate inspections in both residential and industrial settings.

Evolving beyond its initial application, it now employs Nvidia DeepStream for defect detection in insulation glove manufacturing, earning the nickname Mavihub.

Enhanced further by Muhammad Ahmed for the competition, Maviglasses now uses OpenVINO and AnomLib to excel in identifying component mismatches and defects in printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturing and assembly.

APU’s faculty played a crucial role in this achievement. Under the guidance of Krishna Ravinchandra, Assoc Prof Ts Dr Sathish Kumar Selva Perumal, Ir Narendran Ramasenderan, and APU’s Chief Innovation & Enterprise Officer (CIEO) Professor Dr Vinesh Thiruchelvam, this revolutionary technology highlights APU’s commitment to bridging technology with practical applications.

Maviglasses’ success highlights the transformative impact of advancing technology on the aviation industry.

Emerging trends, including autonomous aircraft, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), blockchain, 3D printing, and electric and hybrid aircraft, are reshaping the sector.

Additionally, advancements in biometrics, predictive maintenance, in-flight connectivity, cloud computing, advanced materials, and next-generation air traffic control are all playing crucial roles.

These innovations enhance safety, efficiency, and customer experience while significantly reducing environmental impact. Ensuring the future resilience of aviation and aerospace requires a workforce adept at tackling these challenges, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all.
  • SDG 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation, and foster innovation.
  • SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.
