UCSI students create stunning Kolam at Pavilion Bukit Jalil

UCSI students have brightened Pavilion Bukit Jalil this Deepavali, transforming the mall with a remarkable 1,500-square-foot kolam—a traditional Indian art form symbolising joy and unity.

In just nine hours, 42 students from UCSI University and UCSI College crafted the intricate design, which now stands as a major attraction for the mall’s Diwali Festival of Illumination, running until 1 November 2024.

Students from UCSI’s Institute of Creative Arts and Design led the initiative, aiming to highlight the Deepavali spirit and promote the ideals of Malaysia Madani.

Kolam Art: A vibrant symbol of unity

Alongside the 1,500-square-foot centrepiece, UCSI students created two additional kolams, measuring 225 square feet and 144 square feet, showcasing their skill and dedication to Malaysian cultural heritage.

Pavilion Bukit Jalil’s second floor now buzzes with visitors drawn to the colourful kolams, which embody the Deepavali message of light and unity.

UCSI College Board of Governors chairperson, Datin Lily Ng, expressed her appreciation for Pavilion Bukit Jalil’s collaboration in showcasing these students’ talent.

“Our students have illuminated not only their creativity but also the beauty of Malaysia’s cultural diversity,” she said.

“Thank you, Pavilion Bukit Jalil, for this incredible platform.”

Deepavali festival of illumination

Beyond the kolams, UCSI students took part in a vibrant saree fashion show held before the festival’s media launch.

The show celebrated traditional attire, allowing students to explore and represent Indian cultural heritage during the festivities.

Their participation in the event highlights UCSI’s commitment to offering hands-on, culturally immersive experiences that celebrate Malaysia’s multicultural identity.

“This experience has deepened my understanding of Deepavali and the rich heritage of kolam,” said UCSI student Tan Kai Qi.

“It’s shown me the value of embracing our cultural diversity, which is essential in a multicultural nation like Malaysia.”

These stunning kolams remain on display at Pavilion Bukit Jalil as part of the mall’s Diwali Festival of Illumination until 1 November, inviting all to witness and celebrate unity through art and diversity.

The kolams and festival activities bring a visual celebration of Malaysia’s diversity to life, inviting everyone to explore and embrace this Deepavali season’s message of unity.
