The Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) recently celebrated the achievements of Cohort 3 from its Digital Tourism Innovation Lab (DTIL), a programme aimed at accelerating digital transformation in Malaysia’s tourism industry.
This year’s DTIL event showcased innovative pitches from tourism technology startups, each proposing solutions to redefine the future of Malaysian tourism.
MDEC’s initiative aligns closely with the Ministry of Digital’s vision to position Malaysia as a leader in digital advancements across Southeast Asia.
Held at Common Ground Bukit Bintang, the DTIL event was attended by leaders from Malaysia’s tourism and digital sectors.
Representatives from the Ministry of Digital presented certificates to the 24 participating companies, recognising their contributions to advancing Malaysia’s tourism ecosystem.
Several participants have already secured funding from angel investors and venture capitalists, while others have seen significant revenue growth and regional expansion.
Fostering a thriving tourism tech ecosystem
DTIL is more than a programme—it serves as a dynamic platform designed to foster a strong tourism tech ecosystem in Malaysia.
By supporting startups that drive digitalisation and innovation, MDEC’s initiative elevates Malaysia’s tourism offerings while promoting sustainable economic growth.
Since DTIL’s inception, over 117 startups have applied, with 24 companies selected across three cohorts.
Each selected startup embarks on an intensive eight-week programme featuring mentorship, funding opportunities, and access to state-of-the-art facilities.
“DTIL is an incredible opportunity for tourism startups to transform the industry.
Our mission is to equip these companies with the tools and guidance they need to make a real impact on tourism in Malaysia,” said an MDEC representative.
Through collaboration with industry experts, DTIL participants work on cutting-edge solutions that address industry needs, enhance the tourist experience, and support local communities.
MDEC preparing for the future of tourism in Malaysia
Tourism is a critical component of Malaysia’s economy, with enormous potential to further bolster the country’s GDP.
As Statista reports, travel and tourism are projected to contribute USD16 trillion to global GDP by 2034, making up 11.4% of the world economy.
Key investments in technologies like AI, IoT, immersive tech, blockchain, Web3, and quantum computing are transforming the tourism landscape worldwide, and Malaysia is well-positioned to leverage these advancements.
With Visit Malaysia Year 2026 approaching, MDEC’s DTIL initiative is timely, aiming to establish Malaysia’s tourism sector as a leader in digital innovation within the region.
The programme’s partnership with 1337 Ventures has further strengthened its capacity to attract top talent and foster digital solutions that improve the tourism experience while benefiting local communities.
“MDEC’s DTIL programme is setting a new standard for digital tourism in Malaysia. The support we received has been instrumental in helping us innovate and grow,” shared a Cohort 3 participant.
Looking ahead, MDEC remains committed to empowering startups, innovators, and industry leaders who are redefining Malaysia’s digital tourism landscape.
By nurturing technology-driven tourism solutions, DTIL not only brings fresh energy to the sector but also contributes meaningfully to Malaysia’s economy.
