Steel Recon Industries (SRI), Malaysia’s leading manufacturer of firefighting equipment, marked its 50th anniversary with a grand gala dinner at the St. Regis Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The event, themed “50 Years of Leading the Fight Against Fire,” celebrated the company’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a globally recognised Malaysian brand. Over 500 guests, including industry leaders, employees, and distinguished dignitaries, attended the celebration, which highlighted SRI’s commitment to innovation and safeguarding lives.
In a symbolic gesture of community support, SRI Founder and Managing Director, Dato’ Ong Yow Siang, presented a RM50,000 cheque to Persatuan Kebajikan Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelemat Malaysia. The contribution was received by YAS Dato’ Ts. Nor Hisham Bin Mohammad, Director-General of the Fire & Rescue Department, further cementing SRI’s dedication to social responsibility.
Dato’ Ong, reflecting on the company’s history, said, “In the 1960s, we saw an urgent need to build a safer and more self-reliant Malaysia. At the time, firefighting equipment was entirely imported, placing a heavy financial burden on property owners and draining our nation’s resources. This inspired us to take action, and in 1974, SRI was born. Although our early years were challenging, the industrial boom of the 1980s allowed us to harness local expertise and expand into manufacturing a full range of firefighting products.”
Honouring Employees and Long-Term Contributions
The gala dinner also paid tribute to 34 employees who have served SRI for 10 to 50 years. Among them was Works Director Mr. Tan Jee Yee, who received the first long-service award of the evening for his remarkable 50-year tenure.
Mr. Tan shared his heartfelt reflections, “SRI has been more than a workplace—it’s a place where I’ve grown both professionally and personally. I started working here as a teenager, and now, in my sixties, I continue to contribute to the company with pride. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of raising my own family, watching my children grow, and now even having grandchildren, all while being part of an organisation that values its people as its greatest asset.”
The evening underscored the critical role of employees, business partners, and customers in SRI’s success. SRI’s products, trusted globally in high-stakes environments such as airports, petrochemical plants, and stadiums, were highlighted as symbols of quality and reliability.
Global Recognition and a Star-Studded Evening
YB Tuan Nga Kor Ming, Minister of Housing and Local Government, commended SRI via video message for its pioneering achievements in Malaysia’s firefighting industry. As the first Malaysian company to export firefighting equipment and hold certifications from over 20 international regulatory bodies, SRI was praised for its enduring commitment to safety and excellence.
The gala featured performances by Malaysian rock legend Amy Search and the Shang Sisters, adding vibrancy to the evening. Guests left inspired by the company’s enduring legacy and its vision for the future.
As SRI celebrates five decades of innovation and resilience, it continues to uphold its mission of protecting lives and properties, solidifying its status as a proud Malaysian-made global brand.
