Five Arts Centre, Malaysia’s pioneering arts collective, is set to stage Mortal Man: Two Monologues from December 12 to 15, 2024.
Written by acclaimed playwright Leow Puay Tin, the production redefines storytelling with its tikam-tikam format, where scenes unfold in an order determined by chance.
This unique approach ensures no two performances are alike, captivating audiences with its spontaneity and innovation.
“It’s not just theatre; it’s an experience that feels alive and unpredictable,” said Mark Teh, creative coordinator of Five Arts Centre.
The play examines the intertwined lives of a female writer and a male director, delving into their childhoods, artistic journeys, and personal struggles.
While one story follows a traditional narrative, the other changes nightly, creating sequences that can feel serendipitous, haunting, or even comedic.
An unprecedented approach to theatre
Puay Tin’s tikam-tikam storytelling method draws inspiration from Malaysia’s traditional raffle boards, embracing randomness as a central element.
The result is a theatrical experience that mirrors life’s unpredictability.
“She has this remarkable way of writing performance texts that allows the director or audience to decide the sequence,” Teh explained.
“It’s a bold move that keeps the performers on edge and the audience fully engaged.”
The production also marks a milestone in Puay Tin’s longstanding collaboration with Five Arts Centre.
Her works have been a mainstay of the collective since the 1980s, starting with her debut in Emily of Emerald Hill.
Known for her sharp wit and deeply empathetic storytelling, Puay Tin’s plays capture the complexity of human experiences, blending humour with profound insight.
Mortal Man: A Celebration of life’s imperfections
In conjunction with the production, Five Arts Centre is launching Tikam-Tikam: Chance Encounters with Performance Texts.
This unbound collection of six of Puay Tin’s works mirrors the play’s playful randomness.
Presented as a set of text cards, the format allows readers to create their own sequences, echoing the unpredictability of tikam-tikam.
“This is not just a book—it’s an experience,” said Teh. “It invites readers to read, play, and perform Puay Tin’s works in their own way.”
The collection, developed over seven years, will be available during the play’s run and in bookstores soon after.
Mortal Man isn’t just about storytelling—it’s a meditation on memory, choices, and the unpredictable paths we take.
The play’s themes resonate deeply with audiences, reflecting the messy yet beautiful tapestry of life.
“Through this work, we see how chance shapes not just stories but lives,” Teh said. “It’s a celebration of imperfection and creativity.”
The production runs for four performances only at Five Arts Centre’s studio in GMBB, downtown Kuala Lumpur.
For theatre lovers and anyone intrigued by the art of storytelling, this is a must-see event.
