LEGOLAND Malaysia School Challenge 2026 returns bigger than ever

LEGOLAND Malaysia School Challenge 2026 returns, inviting students across Asia to design creative theme park rides and compete for regional prizes.

Asia’s largest LEGO®-based school competition is set to make a highly anticipated return as LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort unveils the fifth edition of the LEGOLAND School Challenge 2026, reinforcing its position as a leading regional platform for youth creativity and innovation.

Since its inception in 2022, the initiative has expanded beyond Malaysia into a prominent Asia-wide competition, drawing hundreds of entries annually from schools across the region. Organised in collaboration with Ministry of Education Malaysia, the challenge continues to champion Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) education through experiential, play-based learning rooted in LEGO’s philosophy.

Designing the ultimate theme park ride

The 2026 edition introduces a fresh and imaginative brief, tasking student teams to conceptualise and build “The Ultimate Theme Park Ride.” Open to teams of three to four participants, the competition is divided into three categories: Junior (7–9 years), Primary (10–12 years), and Secondary (13–17 years).

Participants are encouraged to push creative boundaries, designing rides that could range from magical and futuristic concepts to space or underwater adventures. Each entry must feature at least one clearly defined ride vehicle or carriage, with additional scoring opportunities awarded for incorporating moving elements, whether manual or motorised.

Beyond construction, storytelling remains a critical component. Teams are required to submit a 50 to 100-word description in English explaining their concept, ensuring that their builds communicate a cohesive and engaging narrative.

“The LEGOLAND School Challenge has evolved into more than a competition – it is a regional platform that empowers young minds to think boldly, collaborate across cultures, and turn imagination into innovation,” said Cs Lim, Vice President of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort.

“By launching this year’s Challenge in Singapore, we are reinforcing our commitment to building stronger regional participation and giving students across Asia the opportunity to showcase their creativity on an international stage. Via learning-through-play, we are nurturing future-ready skills that extend far beyond the classroom.”

Enhanced finale and regional rewards

This year’s Grand Finale introduces several new elements designed to intensify the competitive edge. A key highlight is the “Make or Break” Speed Build, which now contributes 30 per cent of the total score, up from 20 per cent in previous editions, significantly raising the stakes for finalists.

Finalists will also benefit from extended build time, with one hour allocated for the live challenge compared to 45 minutes previously. The on-the-spot theme, revealed only during the finale, may differ from the main competition brief, requiring teams to demonstrate adaptability and quick thinking.

Adding a lighter dimension to the competition is the newly introduced Parents & Teachers Challenge, a 15-minute fun build segment that invites educators and parents to participate alongside students.

In terms of rewards, the competition continues to offer substantial incentives. In partnership with Trip.com, champions in the Primary and Secondary categories will win an exclusive trip to LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort, while Junior category winners will enjoy a curated experience at LEGOLAND Malaysia.

Additionally, the top five teams in each category will advance to the Grand Finale, scheduled tentatively for September 2026 at LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. Finalists will receive a three-day, two-night stay at the LEGOLAND Hotel, compete in live judging rounds, and have their creations exhibited to park visitors through the end of 2026.

All category champions will also take home a LEGOLAND Malaysia Annual Pass, an official LEGO trophy, LEGO sets for each team member, and a Certificate of Achievement.

Registration for the competition is open from 13 March to 26 April 2026, followed by online submissions between 8 and 21 June 2026, which must include photos, a video presentation, and a written description.
