The federal government is ready to face the eventuality of the second wave of floods in the east coast this month, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
He said the Meteorological Department has forecast the second wave to occur
between Dec 11 and 14 and Dec 25 and 28 during high tide and when there are huge
waves.
“We are ready for the second wave of floods and will provide aid to all evacuees,” he told reporters after presenting compassionate aid to 127 flood victims from the Kota Baharu, Bachok and Pasir Puteh districts, at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pak Badol.
After the event, Nazri attended a preparatory briefing on the second wave of floods at the Kelantan state secretariat at Kota Darul Naim in Kota Baharu.
Nazri said the government has tightened the condition for aid to flood evacuees, giving assistance only to those who evacuate to relief centres, to ensure that there is no abuse and the aid reaches the target group.
In the first wave of floods in Kelantan, on Nov 22 and 23, some 3,930 people in eight districts were evacuated to 43 relief centres.
The floods claimed six lives, two in the Bachok district and one each in the Kota Baharu, Machang, Pasir Mas and Rantau Panjang districts.
On another matter, Nazri, who is also an Umno supreme council member, said it is not proper for the PAS-led Kelantan government to fault the federal government for its (the state government’s) failure to implement “hudud” laws in the state.
He said the state government raised the issue on purpose seasonally just before elections to garner the people’s support.
