An engineering consultant, Khalimudin Che Din, 52, was today fined RM6,500 by the Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to having firecrackers and fireworks in his possession.
He was alleged to have committed the offence under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 at No. 2, Jalan Maju 5, Taman Kemajuan, here, at 5.15pm on Aug 4.
The Section carries a jail term of up to seven years or a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
Khalimudin, who was unrepresented, paid the fine. In mitigation, he had asked for a lenient sentence as he is a widower with an 11-year-old son.
However, deputy public prosecutor Noorsyazwani Mohamad Sobry asked for an appropriate penalty as the accused had kept a large amount of firecrackers and fireworks for the purpose of selling them, as well as a deterrence to the public.
