Damai Central, a new resort-styled multi-purpose complex in Santubong, will become another tourist spot that will
enhance Damai as Sarawak’s premier holiday destination.
Assistant Tourism and Heritage Minister Talib Zulpilip said the complex, sited on the shore of South China Sea and set against the backdrop of the legendary Mount Santubong, would be a new and exciting business and event hub to the scenic holiday oasis.
The new Damai Central, snuggled between popular resorts – Damai Beach Resort and Damai Puri Resort & Spa, Sarawak’s tourism icon, Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV), Damai Golf and Country Club, Camp Permai, will enrich holiday experience for the locals and tourists.
“The new facility will complement all the tourism assets here. This will transform Santubong peninsula into a major tourist destination within Sarawak,” he told reporters at a cocktail to introduce the facility to stakeholders and
the media here last night.
Damai Central, about 35km from here, is one of the components of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporarions (SEDC)’s Damai Tourism Masterplan. It is managed by Damai Bay Management Sdn Bhd.
The RM18 million Damai Central is designed according to Sarawak’s ethnic concept and can accommodate 3,000 people. It houses an open-air arena, open stage, a multi-purpose hall, food court featuring local and fusion food, 15
units of commercial lots and six booths.
Talib, who is also SEDC Chairman, said the new Damai Central was ideal for staging festive activities and events such as exhibitions, concerts, carnivals, sports and themed functions.
He added the complex would provide business opportunities for the local entrepreneurs, including people from Santubong to tap the tourism dollar in the area.
Meanwhile, Director, Damai Bay Management Sdn Bhd, Denis Hon said Damai Central was geared towards providing an attractive and fascinating holiday venue for holiday makers, tourists and locals.
“With the advantage of the natural ambiance of sun, sand and sea, Damai Central, set against the Mount Santubong and the South China Sea, will enhance fascinating and unique holiday experience to visitors.
“We aim to develop Damai Central into the ultimate getaway destination in Kuching,” he said.
Hon said the commercials lots in the complex would be occupied by a seafood restaurant, bar, convenience shop and souvenir outlets while the booths would cater for arranging tours, rental of recreational facilities and services.
“The management plans to organise regular theme events such as carnivals, concerts and exhibition in partnership with external event organisers to boost the attraction and popularity of the region,” he said.
