Get ready for a lively and colourful celebration of Japanese culture as the Bon Odori Festival makes its highly anticipated return to Malaysia. The festival will take place on 22nd July 2023 at the Shah Alam National Sports Complex (Panasonic Stadium).
Sponsored by The Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, The Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan, this annual event has been a cherished tradition since 1977.
With approximately 35,000 participants each year, the Bon Odori Festival has flourished into a spectacular spectacle that captivates people of all ages.
This year’s celebration coincides with the 60th year anniversary of the Japan Club.
Festival highlights and activities
As the Bon Odori Festival opens its gates at 4:30 pm, attendees will be immersed in a vibrant and enchanting atmosphere.
Picture people of all races and ages elegantly dressed in kimonos or yukatas, strolling around the festival grounds while the lively beats of Japanese pop-punk music fill the air.
A delightful array of pop-up stalls will offer a wide variety of Japanese street food, beverages, and souvenirs, ensuring attendees can indulge in their favourite treats and find unique treasures to take home.
The highlight of the festival is the Bon Odori dance, which takes place on an elevated wooden platform called yagura.
Adorned in traditional Japanese attire, dancers will gracefully move to the rhythmic beats of traditional Japanese drums, known as taiko, accompanied by lively folk songs.
Visitors are encouraged to join in the dance, creating a joyful and inclusive atmosphere that celebrates community and cultural exchange.
In addition to the Bon Odori dance, attendees can enjoy captivating performances by talented students from the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur. These performances will provide a delightful interlude, allowing participants to catch their breath before diving back into the festive dance party.
Bon Odori Festival controversy
In 2022, the Bon Odori Festival faced controversy when the former Minister of Religious Affairs, Idris Ahmad, cautioned Muslims against participating in the event, citing elements influenced by other religions.
However, after receiving criticism from various quarters, the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, intervened and directed the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) to permit the festival.
JAIS officials, along with representatives from the Shah Alam City Council, were instructed to personally attend Bon Odori to observe the nature of the festivities. This intervention aimed to foster understanding and promote unity among different communities.
The Bon Odori Festival promises an unforgettable experience, featuring the enchanting Bon Odori dance, captivating performances, traditional Japanese drum performances, and an array of delectable food stalls.

To facilitate transportation, a free shuttle service will be available from the Shah Alam KTM station to the event venue. However, due to the expected high attendance, it is advisable to anticipate queues for the shuttle service.
