Compensate kg manggi residents fairly

Filed under: Uncategorized — rrajes @ 10:23 pm

OLD KLANG ROAD – Kampung Manggis residents should be compensated fairly before their homes being demolished by the developer who acquired the land, said Pantai MP, Nurul Izzah.

She made the call in a press conference highlighting the plight of the Kampung Manggis residents yesterday at the soon to be demolished settlement.

“They have paid the land taxes, cleared all the related bills, and they are not squatters, they have an agreement with the land owners,” said Nurul Izzah.

She claimed that similar cases have happened before in Lembah Pantai. Affected individuals have been awarded with compensation packages as opposed to Kampung Manggis residents whom, yet to receive anything.

According to Nurul Izzah, the DBKL’s Economic Planning and Development Coordination Department whom responsible for solving problems such as this, is aware of the situation in Kampung Manggis. However they only responded recently, even though I had met them with the resident’s representative two months ago.

“DBKL must be fair to everyone”, said Nurul Izzah whom promised to meet the Mayor as soon as possible to solve this issue.

Meanwhile, lawyer Latheefa Koya, said the residents do not have to fear demolition until a court order is shown to them, ordering them to leave the premise.

“Until then no excavators or bulldozers can come into the village”, said Latheefa.

Nurul Izzah is now pushing for an immediate appointment with the mayor of Kuala Lumpur, Ahmad Fuad Ismail, to resolve this issue.

Kg Manggis protest postponed

Filed under: Uncategorized — rrajes @ 2:09 pm

OLD KLANG ROAD – The residents of the soon to be demolished Kampung Manggis has decided to postpone the protest which suppose to be organized this Saturday.

Kampung Manggis Residents Association Chairperson, Law Kim Heng announced the decision today with the hope that they will be given a fair compensation and the deadline for eviction extended.

“Most of the residents here are old folks and in the low income bracket, evicting them in this manner will be inappropriate”, say Law.

Residents of Kg Manggis showing the eviction notice

Meanwhile, Pantai MP, Nurul Izzah Anwar questions the logic of evicting these residents without giving them a proper place to move in to.

According to her, the case of Kampung Manggis residents is the same as Bukit Kerinchi residents whom have evicted because they occupied a land, which belonged to a private owner. The Bukit Kerinchi residents were placed in PPR Chempaka after the eviction but the fate of Kampung Manggis is still unknown.

“So the question is why two laws for the same issue”, asked the Pantai MP in a phone interview yesterday.

Nurul Izzah has been trying to resolve the issue of Kampung Manggis since last year but her efforts were halted when the landowners sold the land to Sentrilands Sdn Bhd for development.

In a bid to help the residents she is putting a legal team together to look into the issue and invite the representative of the residents from all the phases. She also intends to ask the developers to join the dialogue to find an amicable solution.

Meanwhile the DBKL’s Deputy Director, Mohd. Amin Nordin stated that the City Hall will only help relocating squatter if the land is owned by the government. In the case of Kampung Manggis it is the prerogative of the developers and former landowners to provide an alternative for the residents.

Kampung Manggis residents have been issued with an eviction notice by the developer to move out of the land they currently occupy. Sentrilands Sdn Bhd the current owner of the land has earmarked the land for a development project.
