In conjunction with World Immunisation Week, the Selangor Vaccination Programme (Selvax) 2023 will offer 20,000 doses of Covid-19 and 10,000 doses of pneumococcal vaccines to senior citizens for free. The World Immunisation Week is celebrated from April 24 to 30 this year.
Selvax is a joint initiative of the Selangor state government, Selcare Clinics, and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (PBSM). The state government has allocated RM1.5 million for the initiative to provide free vaccines to the people of Selangor.
Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, the state executive councillor for public health, said that the state government has allocated more than RM1 million since 2021 to provide thousands of vaccine doses for free through the Selvax initiative. She emphasized that immunisation is a preventive and self-protection measure that is scientifically proven to be the safest. She hopes that more Selangor people would remain protected and develop strong immunity.
The Selvax Community and Selvax Industry programmes were launched on June 30, 2021, to expedite the vaccination process for the people in the state during the Covid-19 pandemic. The programme aimed to benefit a total of 1.25 million people in Selangor, focusing on the low-income group, senior citizens, and industrial workers.
The move to set up the Selvax programme was in line with the federal government’s National Covid-19 Immunisation initiative (PICK). The state government aims to provide protection and security for the people of Selangor by making immunisation a means of safeguarding them.
Dr Siti Mariah stated that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has set the last week of April as World Immunisation Week to raise public awareness about the importance of immunisation and how it could offer protection to individuals and communities. The Selangor government is continuously concerned about promoting immunisation to provide protection and security for the people.
The initiative is expected to provide a timely response to the Covid-19 pandemic, especially among the elderly population, who are at a higher risk of severe illness or death from Covid-19. The state government hopes that this initiative will encourage more people to come forward to get vaccinated and protect themselves and their families from the virus.
With the Selvax initiative, the state government is providing free vaccines to the people of Selangor, making immunisation accessible to everyone, regardless of their income. The state government is committed to promoting immunisation as an effective measure to protect public health and contain the spread of infectious diseases.
