Where cannabis and Koran recital sit cheek by jowl

The seizure of 117kg of cannabis at Merbok on Wednesday shows the state has not become a drug trafficking hub, said Kedah Police Chief Ahmad Ibrahim last night at the Kedah Police Contingent Koran Recital Finals.

Bernama reports that Kedah Police Chief Ahmad Ibrahim has denied claims that the state has become the northern hub for drug trafficking.

Referring to major arrests made by the State Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, he stressed this did not mean the state had become a
drug trafficking hub but it showed that police were serious in curbing such activities.

“For example, the arrest involving 117kg of cannabis worth RM400,000 by Kedah police in Merbok on Wednesday and the few other arrests in previous months shows that surveillance is continuously being carried out,” he told reporters after launching and presenting prizes to winners of the Kedah Police Contingent’s Koran Recital finals here last night.

Langkawi and Bukit Kayu Hitam are said to be the cross-border gateways for drug running.
