Penang Green Council (PGC), in partnership with AISoftBox Sdn Bhd and JCI United Penang, has introduced a new eco-friendly initiative called the ‘Penang No Paper Receipt Day’ campaign.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and encourage the adoption of paperless receipts as a new cultural norm in Penang.

With the success of the state’s previous ‘no plastic bag’ campaign, the government is determined to continue advocating for green practices.

During the campaign launch at Komtar, Josephine Tan, the general manager of PGC, emphasized Penang’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

She highlighted that most retail receipts are non-recyclable and contain bisphenol, a harmful chemical. To address this issue, 200 retailers have pledged their support for the paperless receipt campaign.

Tan expressed gratitude to all partners and sponsors, urging everyone to join the effort.

Phee Boon Poh, Penang Welfare and Environment Committee chairman

Phee Boon Poh, the state Welfare and Environment Committee chairman, emphasized that the campaign aligns with the Penang 2030 vision of creating a “Family-focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation.”

Phee commended the retailers for their participation, noting the progress made since the launch of the ‘no plastic bag’ campaign in 2009.

He encouraged perseverance during the challenging initial phase of the campaign and thanked the younger generation for initiating the ‘Penang No Paper Receipt Day’ campaign.

Reducing carbon emissions by reducing the usage of paper

Phee highlighted that a single paper receipt emits approximately 2.5g of carbon throughout its lifetime. By promoting paperless receipts, the campaign aims to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

The campaign will take place from June to August 2023 at participating outlets and stores. During this period, paper receipts will not be automatically provided but will be available upon request.

This partnership signifies the collaborative effort to drive the implementation of paperless receipts and sustainable practices in Penang.

By reducing paper waste and carbon emissions, the initiative strives to create a greener and smarter state. The success of the campaign depends on the participation and support of the public, retailers, and organizations, all working together towards a sustainable future.
