The Kampung Baru Development Association or Persatuan Pembangunan Kampung Baru (PPKB) has no objection to the government renovating and upgrading the Jamek Mosque there, but feels the mosque is not suitable as a development catalyst or iconic landmark for the area.
In a statement issued today, the association said in the context of Kampung Baru’s development, a tower would be more apt as a transformation icon as what the Petronas Twin Towers are for the Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) area.
“Therefore, PPKB hopes the government will explain the proposed construction of the new 60-storey twin towers costing RM500 million which was launched in 2009 as we feel this project is most suitable as a catalyst for Kampung Baru’s development,” it said.
However, the association, which comprises landowners in Kampung Baru, thanked Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak for announcing a RM20 million allocation for renovating and upgrading the Kampung Baru Jamek Mosque.
At the same time, it hoped the government could realise the building of the proposed twin towers for Kampung Baru to be in tandem with the area’s development plan.
The statement also said that the association had always given its views on the development plans for Kampung Baru since 1995 although many of the landowners no longer lived in the area and had rented out their property to others.
“In fact, the association had voiced its objection to the proposed development of Kampung Baru with 60 per cent Malays and 40 per cent non-Malays,” it added in the statement.
