A woman who had her husband murdered and her daughter raped some 9 years ago is still waiting for the offenders in the crime against her family to be punished.
The woman, who only identified herself as Mallika, has already lodged 16 police reports after her daughter, who was then 8 years old, was raped.
Even though the police were urged to provide protection to the family as they were being hunted down by the criminals who were involved in the rape, the family did not receive any protection.
As a result, they had to shift houses, reportedly three times, before they were tracked down and their house was attacked. In spite of the 16 police reports, Mallika’s husband was murdered, believed to be done by the same criminals.
In an open court proceeding recently, Human Rights Party (HRP) leader P. Uthayakumar, who is also serving as the family’s lawyer, demanded that the criminals be prosecuted, and also questioned the police’s integrity and connection to the case.
The rape victim, who is now 17, had previously attempted suicide due to her traumatic experience.
