Gurney Paragon Mall is hosting an exceptional exhibition, titled “Cultural Diplomacy: Connecting Diversity,” featuring the extraordinary photography of Joie Koo.
The event was inaugurated by Penang State EXCO for Tourism and Creative Economy Yeoh Soon Hin, along with Chief Operating Officer Koay Bee Fong.
Visitors can explore Joie Koo’s captivating artwork, which beautifully captures the essence of traditional performing arts and culture. The exhibition will be open until June 14, 2023.
Penang is renowned for its cultural diversity, making it a sought-after destination for tourists and investors alike. The outdoor photo exhibition, situated at the main entrance of Gurney Paragon Mall, showcases artworks inspired by local photographer Joie Koo.
As a brand ambassador for Fujifilm, Koo’s collaborations with international artists in dance, choreography, lighting design, and photography have enriched his artistic vision.
The exhibition highlights the multiracial performing arts, visual storytelling, architectural wonders, historical sites, and natural landscapes that embody Penang’s cultural heritage. Organized by Koo and ZXC Theatre Troupe, the event receives support from the Penang government.
Joie Koo’s journey into the world of photography began during his high school days when he started exploring different angles and capturing human portraits. Although he had a deep passion for expressing himself through images, it wasn’t until the early 30s that he decided to pursue photography as a career.
As one of Malaysia’s prominent fashion photographers, Joie has mastered the art of transforming ideas and stories into captivating visual compositions. In 2016 when he became the sole official photographer for the opening performance of the Beijing Dance Festival. Joie’s ability to integrate emotions and movements in his photography captures the essence of performing arts, freezing them in captivating and awe-inspiring visuals.
Yeoh expresses his appreciation for Joie Koo’s talent in capturing the essence of multiracial performing arts through his lens. The artworks not only exhibit aesthetic beauty but also serve as a testament to Penang’s rich cultural heritage and the unity found within its diversity.
Yeoh emphasizes the state government’s commitment to supporting creativity in a sustainable manner, ensuring the industry’s positive impact on Penang’s economic and social development. The exhibition features 15 large prints, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of Penang’s cultural mosaic.
