The Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) has celebrated the remarkable victory of Tammy Tan Hui Ling, a final-year Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Actuarial Studies degree student.
Tammy clinched Malaysia’s first-ever gold medal in the World University Games (Universiade) women’s qiangshu (spear) event in Chengdu, China. Her triumphant return was marked by a heartfelt welcome from her university peers and faculty, illuminating the pride and achievement she brought home.
A historic triumph
Tammy’s exceptional performance secured her the gold medal with an impressive score of 9.613 points. Macau’s Weng Ian Wong claimed the silver medal with 9.593 points, while Lydia Sham Hui Yu from Hong Kong secured the bronze with 9.583 points.
Tammy’s achievement marked a significant milestone for Malaysia, as she became the nation’s first Universiade gold medallist since its participation began in 1985.
“I feel really happy to have won this gold medal and to bring this honour to Malaysia. I am genuinely delighted to consider this medal as the best gift for everyone who has supported us all along,” enthused Tammy, as she was humbled by the realisation that her achievement was the result of the support of all parties involved.
“I genuinely believe this isn’t solely my effort. We’ve consistently received a lot of support and assistance from the Malaysian Martial Arts Association, MOHE, National Sports Council, the National Sports Institute, and APU,” said Tammy.
As national athletes studying at APU, Tammy and her sportsmates received strong support from APU in the form of a Sports Scholarship as well as continuous facilitation to enable the team to participate in their training sessions.
A joyful welcome by APU
Upon her return, Tammy was greeted by the enthusiastic APU welcoming team, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Ho Chin Kuan.
The airport reception featured the presence of MOHE Deputy Secretary-general (policy) Dato’ Megat Sany Megat Ahmad Supian, Division Secretary of Strategic Planning Division Puan Fazidah Mustafa, and President of Wushu Federation Malaysia Dato’ Chong Kim Fatt. This heartfelt reception demonstrated the university’s immense pride in Tammy’s achievement.
Tammy expressed her astonishment at winning the gold medal, especially considering that she had just turned 22 three days before the competition. She shared her joy in bringing this honour to Malaysia and acknowledged the unwavering support from various entities, including the Malaysian Martial Arts Association, MOHE, National Sports Council, National Sports Institute, and APU.
Tammy’s success stands as a testament to her dedication and the support she received from her university and the larger community. APU’s strong focus on holistic development and professional excellence has empowered students like Tammy to excel not only in academics but also on the global stage of sports.
As Tammy prepares to embark on her graduation journey, she continues to cherish the vibrant university life that APU offers.
