As Malaysia Day approaches, The Actors Studio Seni Teater Rakyat, in collaboration with ArtsFAS, Yayasan Hasanah, and the Ministry of Finance, prepares to unveil a remarkable reinterpretation of a beloved Malaysian tale.
Directed by Joe Hasham OAM, “JEBAT” is set to premiere globally on September 16 and will run until September 24 on klpac’s Pentas 1 stage.
This new play, penned by U-En Ng, a seasoned journalist and biographer, promises a fresh perspective on the iconic Malaysian narrative. Ng, known for his contributions to the award-winning musical “Ismail The Last Days,” brings his storytelling prowess to “JEBAT.”
JEBAT: A post-apocalyptic saga
“JEBAT” emerges as The Actors Studio’s flagship production for 2023, boasting nearly 40 talented performers. This contemporary reimagining transports the audience to a post-apocalyptic Malaysia plagued by perpetual conflict. Within this turmoil unfolds the gripping tale of Hang Jebat, focusing on his yearning for freedom, love, and respect, in contrast to Hang Tuah’s unwavering loyalty to his king.
Director Joe Hasham sheds light on the production’s significance, stating that while Hang Tuah has received significant attention, “JEBAT” offers the first major English-language exploration of Jebat’s character.
It delves into his motivations and seeks to present an alternative viewpoint to the commonly held perception of his actions.
The play retains traditional elements, including the use of the keris (dagger) and silat (martial arts) that are integral to the original story. However, it infuses innovation with new music compositions that blend Eastern and Western styles, multimedia design, military costuming, and a visually stunning post-apocalyptic set.
A creative collaboration
The realisation of “JEBAT” required a dedicated team to bring this vision to life. Silat Master Danial Nawawi, with 18 years of expertise, trained the cast in this traditional martial art. Meanwhile, Choreographer Zhafir Muzani choreographed the dynamic fight sequences and movements.
One of the production’s highlights is its specially composed music by Siu Yee, drawing inspiration from her extensive experience with Malay Gamelan, Western percussion, and traditional drumming. This musical fusion, co-composed by cellist Eugene Chong and designed by Christopher Higgs, will be performed by multi-instrumentalists Gideon Alubakhan Chen, Leong Kah Miu, and Matdin Hussin.
The performers, clad in military-style costumes crafted by Costume Designer Wendy Kwek, will take the stage against a breathtaking post-apocalyptic backdrop envisioned by Set Designer Yusman Mokhtar. Multimedia design by Nicholas Chin adds another layer of visual storytelling to the production.
“JEBAT” commences on the eve of battle, where Jebat must bid farewell to his beloved Dayang, knowing that failure to return will endanger her and their unborn child. While the army successfully eliminates their enemies, news arrives of Tuah’s death sentence. Jebat grapples with avenging Tuah’s death while ensuring Dayang’s safety, posing the question: Are the bonds of loyalty unbreakable, or is justice the higher calling?
The public can avail of up to 25% savings with the early bird promotion available until September 10. Educational institutes booking group tickets on September 24 will also have the opportunity to engage in a post-show talk and set tour with Scenographer, Set Designer, Lighting Designer, and Operator Yusman Mokhtar. Limited slots are available, requiring pre-registration during ticket bookings.
Performed primarily in English with a blend of Bahasa Malaysia, this production is made possible with the support of klpac & TAS Foundation. “JEBAT” contains haze effects and depictions of violence due to the intense fight sequences, offering a unique and thought-provoking theatrical experience.
