Penang Hill Railway reaches its 100th anniversary today, celebrating a century of transporting visitors to the majestic Penang Hill.
To mark this milestone, a special button badge featuring three generations of funicular trains is being given away today as a token of appreciation. This commemoration not only honours Penang Hill‘s heritage but also underscores its status as a national treasure.
Over the decades, the funicular train has evolved from steam engine coaches to modern carriages. This centenary celebration aims to rekindle interest in the railway’s history and the transformation of Penang Hill over the past century.
Three generations of Penang Hill funicular trains
The Penang Hill Railway has seen three generations of funicular trains. The First-Generation wooden funicular served from 1923 until 1977, followed by the Second-Generation red and white funicular, which operated from 1977 until 2010, using the same track.
The Third-Generation Funicular, in operation since 2011, runs on an improved track and can accommodate nearly 100 passengers, taking about 5 minutes to reach the hill’s summit.
To obtain the commemorative badge, visitors can redeem it by purchasing tickets at the lower station counter, starting from 8 am, while stocks last.
In August this year, Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) in collaboration with Pos Malaysia Berhad (Pos Malaysia) also launched the Commemorative Stamps and First Day Cover in conjunction with the Penang Hill Railway Centenary Celebration.
Token of appreciation marks the railway’s inception
Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) General Manager Datuk Cheok Lay Leng shared that this token of appreciation marks the railway’s inception in 1923.
Besides the badge giveaway, the celebration at the station includes performances by The Penneo Band, an appearance by Penang Hill mascot Tupai, and balloon sculpture giveaways, taking place from 10 am to noon.
In honour of the Penang Hill Railway’s 100th anniversary, Garaventa AG has offered a significant “birthday gift” in the form of a captivating display. This exhibit beautifully showcases detailed drawings representing the three generations of Penang Hill funiculars.
PHC has been hosting various programs throughout the year, including the introduction of new fast-lane tickets, a revamped funicular train, the launch of “The Great Hill” book, sale of commemorative stamps, and the creation of exhibitions and wall murals as part of the celebration.
Penang Hill has garnered global recognition, ranking as the top tourist attraction in Asia and ninth worldwide by USA Today. This acclaim underscores its affordability and sustainability, attracting visitors who seek a nature-oriented experience.
PHC remains committed to preserving the hill’s natural beauty without excessive development while enhancing infrastructure and providing essential amenities for visitors. The Penang Hill Railway’s 100-year journey continues, reflecting the rich history and ongoing appeal of this iconic destination.
