The Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture (MOTAC), in collaboration with the Sarawak State Government and the Bintulu Administrative Division Office, is set to enchant visitors with the MOTAC@Bintulu programme.
Taking place over three days, from December 29 to December 31, at the Kenyalang Grass Field (Old Airport Field) in Bintulu, the programme aims to showcase the unique charm of Bintulu and promote cultural engagement at the grassroots level.
Bintulu’s unique charm and tourist attractions
Bintulu has been chosen as a focal point for this cultural immersion initiative due to its distinctive appeal that captivates tourists.
The selection aligns with MOTAC’s strategic vision to boost tourism in Sarawak, targeting 35.6 million foreign tourist arrivals and a tourism revenue of RM147.1 billion by Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
Notable attractions in Bintulu include Tanjung Kidurong Beach, Lambir Hills National Park, Monument Council of State, Esplanade Bintulu, Similajau National Park, Tumbina Park, Tanjung Batu Beach, and captivating sailing activities.
MOTAC@Bintulu showcasing cultural riches
Highlighting the authenticity of Sarawak’s longhouses as a major draw for tourists, MOTAC emphasised that traditional longhouse designs remain relevant and enticing for visitors, especially those participating in homestay programmes.
“The main focus of the MOTAC@Bintulu programme is to provide opportunities for the community to generate income through business, the sale of handicraft products, and artistic performances,” stated MOTAC.
The programme extends opportunities for both locals and tourists to immerse themselves in Malaysian arts, culture, and heritage activities, particularly those involving the Bintulu community.
As part of MOTAC@Bintulu, the Borneo Craft Festival will be held until January 7, 2024, featuring 75 local craft entrepreneurs from Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia. The festival covers textiles, forest products, land products, metal products, and various crafts, all under the theme “Ini Budaya Malaysia.”
MOTAC@Bintulu reaches its pinnacle with the Borneo Craft Festival’s opening ceremony, officiated by the Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, on December 31, 2023, at 8:00 pm.
The event promises excitement, marked by a New Year countdown enhanced with fireworks and a people’s performance, providing a fitting conclusion to this cultural celebration. Visitors are encouraged to participate in this unique experience, exploring the richness of Sarawak’s cultural heritage and contributing to the community’s economic prosperity.
