As Melaka prepares to usher in the Chinese New Year, the city is adorned with vibrant decorations, heralding the Year of the Dragon with a colourful array of festivities.
Commencing early in 2024 and culminating on 10 and 11 February 2024, Melaka’s streets will be aglow with the radiance of a thousand red lanterns, symbolising good fortune and joy.
Chinese New Year festive illumination
Melaka’s streets, especially in the heritage areas, will be transformed into a magical spectacle with a thousand red lanterns, symbols of prosperity and happiness.
The cityscape will be illuminated, creating an enchanting and inviting atmosphere that reflects the spirit of the upcoming Chinese New Year.
Malaysia’s oldest traditional Chinese temple, Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, will host essential Chinese New Year rituals.
On 10 February 2024, the temple will be a focal point for prayers and ceremonies, marking the beginning of the lunar year with reverence and hope.
Various celebrations across the city
The Jade Emperor’s celebration holds special significance for Melaka’s Hokkien community, occurring on 18 February 2024, the 9th day of the lunar year.
Commemorating the ruler of heaven in Taoist tradition, this observance involves elaborate prayers and offerings to the Jade Emperor. The night sky will be alive with the sound of firecrackers, believed to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck for the new year.
Melaka will witness festive decorations in various locations and shopping malls, contributing to the overall celebratory ambiance. Lively lion dance performances, synonymous with Chinese New Year and believed to bring good luck and fortune, will captivate audiences.
