In preparation for the upcoming Chinese New Year festivities, the government has announced toll exemptions for personal vehicles on Thursday and Friday (February 8 & 9).
Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted this initiative as part of the government’s commitment to easing financial burdens and prioritising citizen welfare during the festive period.
Big savings with two days of toll-free travel
With Chinese New Year around the corner, the government has declared toll exemptions exclusively for personal vehicles.
The toll fare exemption will apply to all toll plazas in the country except those at national borders, namely Tol Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) and Plaza Tol Tanjung Kupang in Johor
Nanta emphasised the significance of this decision, stating, “This move aligns with the unity government’s commitment to safeguarding the welfare of citizens and easing their financial burdens.”
These toll exemptions, estimated to cost approximately RM42.99 million, will be in effect across all highways from 12:01 a.m. tomorrow until 11:59 p.m. the following day.
No heavy vehicles on the road during CNY
In tandem with toll exemptions, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has enforced a ban on heavy vehicles during the Chinese New Year period.
According to Datuk Lokman Jamaan, JPJ’s senior enforcement director, the ban will be effective on February 8, 9, 12, and 13.
Lokman reiterated that strict action would be taken against companies or individuals found violating the ban, emphasising its necessity to ensure smooth traffic flow for travellers returning to their hometowns and for school holidays.
As preparations for Chinese New Year intensify, the government’s dual approach of toll exemptions for personal vehicles and a heavy vehicle ban highlights its commitment to facilitating hassle-free travel experiences for citizens.
To maximise the benefits of toll-free travel, highway users should heed forthcoming advisories, ensure they are well-rested, and maintain adequate credit balances in their Touch ‘n Go cards and eWallets.
