The proposed ART system promises a significant improvement in Johor’s transportation landscape. Experts believe it could transform connectivity within the state, particularly for the Iskandar region.

This economic corridor, envisioned as an investment metropolis, is poised for further growth with the planned Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The ART system’s ability to seamlessly connect the four major districts of Johor Bahru, Iskandar Puteri, Pasir Gudang, and Kulai, aligns perfectly with the region’s development goals.

Furthermore, Johor is on the cusp of implementing a special financial zone (SFZ) in Forest City.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed optimism that this initiative could propel Johor’s economy ahead of other Malaysian states within the next two years.

An efficient and integrated transportation network, as envisioned through the ART system, would be crucial to support such economic ambitions.

The Ministry of Transport (MOT) has outlined plans to introduce Komuter service to complement the upcoming Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) project slated for full operation in January 2027.

This integration will leverage the shared location of the RTS Link Station in Bukit Chagar with the Gemas-Johor Bahru Electrified Double Tracking Train Project (ETS).

Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasised the importance of integrating the ETS service with the RTS to provide seamless travel options for residents of Senai, Kluang, and Kulai who can utilize the Komuter to connect with the RTS for travel to Singapore.

While the proposal awaits federal approval, its potential to revolutionise connectivity within the state and fuel development in the Iskandar region is undeniable.

As the project progresses, careful consideration will be required to balance cost-effectiveness with passenger capacity and travel speed to ensure the ART system delivers optimal benefits for Johor.
