Durian lovers, rejoice! Penang is gearing up for a potentially record-breaking durian season this year, with expectations of three distinct harvest waves.
Durian delight: A season of abundance
According to Penang’s tourism and creative economy exco, Wong Hon Wai, durian orchard owners are reporting an early start to the season, with fruits already dropping from trees.
“Varieties like 604, Ting Xiang, Xiao Hong, Khun Poh, Musang King, and Black Thorn are all making their early appearances,” he said.
This auspicious start suggests a longer season with a plentiful supply of durian throughout the summer months. Mr. Wong anticipates three distinct waves:
- Wave 1 (Now – Early June): Enjoy the first taste of the season with varieties like 604 and Ting Xiang.
- Wave 2 (Mid-June – July): The ever-popular Musang King and Black Thorn varieties are expected to take center stage.
- Wave 3 (August – September): Savor the final bounty of the season with unique varieties like Khun Poh and Xiao Hong.
A celebration of culture and flavour in Penang
Wong emphasises that Penang’s durian season offers more than just delicious fruit.
“Each variety boasts its own distinct flavour and aroma,” he explains, “making Penang a must-visit destination for durian enthusiasts worldwide.”
Beyond the culinary experience, durian season is a celebration of Penang’s culture and heritage. “Durian is deeply woven into our traditions,” Wong says.
“It’s not uncommon to find durian incorporated into local dishes like soups, sauces, and even curries.”
Wong extends a warm invitation to all visitors: “Durian season is a time to explore, taste, and truly immerse yourself in the unique experiences Penang has to offer.”
