Sunway Group, in collaboration with international hunger relief agency Rise Against Hunger, has successfully hosted Southeast Asia’s largest single-day meal packing event, providing two million meals to underprivileged communities.

Held at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre, the initiative saw around 1,200 volunteers packing more than 500,000 meals in one day.

Graced by His Highness Tengku Amir Shah Ibni Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj, Raja Muda Selangor, alongside Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah and Rise Against Hunger founder Ray Buchanan, the event was held in conjunction with Sunway’s year-long 50th anniversary CSR and community outreach efforts.

This significant event marks the group’s 10-year partnership with Rise Against Hunger and aligning with Sunway’s 50th anniversary celebration.

The meals will benefit vulnerable groups across Malaysia and the region, including the Orang Asli, refugees, and the extreme poor.

Sunway Group’s partnership with Rise Against Hunger has been instrumental in addressing food insecurity across Southeast Asia.

Since the collaboration began in 2014, Sunway has packed over two million meals for undernourished communities, making this initiative a cornerstone of the #SunwayforGood CSR programme.

“We believe no corporation can stand apart from the communities it serves,” said Sunway Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Sir Dr. Jeffrey Cheah.

“Most of our CSR projects focus on helping the marginalised and forgotten sectors of society. My deepest gratitude to all the volunteers who contributed to this noble cause.”

Sunway’s meal pack-a-thon this year will provide much-needed nutrition to over 8,300 beneficiaries, including stateless communities, orphanages, senior homes, and those facing extreme poverty.

Each recipient will receive two nutritionally balanced meals per day for a month, significantly improving their food security.

Collaborative efforts in the fight against hunger

The success of this event was not achieved by Sunway Group alone.

The company worked closely with several NGOs, such as 4×4 Relief Malaysia, Rotary Johor Centennial, and Sahabat Orang Asli, among others, to ensure the meals reached those in need.

Rise Against Hunger founder Ray Buchanan praised the collaboration, stating, “Sunway’s commitment to tackling food insecurity over the last 10 years aligns perfectly with the UN Sustainable Development Goal 17.

Sunway’s CSR initiatives, including this partnership, have collectively contributed more than 30,000 volunteer hours, with staff and volunteers packing meals containing enriched rice, dehydrated vegetables, lentils, and essential nutrients to ensure recipients receive well-balanced sustenance.

Sunway Group shows no signs of slowing down in its efforts to uplift communities.

In November, the company plans to host a charity dinner in collaboration with the Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF).

The event aims to raise RM3 million to support MAF’s Medical Assistance Scheme for individuals living with HIV, further reinforcing Sunway’s ongoing dedication to social causes.

As Sunway continues its 50th anniversary celebrations, the group remains committed to “doing well by doing good,” consistently investing in initiatives that address critical social challenges and contribute to the well-being of underserved communities.
