Grimoire, the latest anthology film by renowned Malaysian filmmaker Jared Lee, is set to captivate audiences nationwide.
Screening at Golden Screen Cinemas from 3 – 30 October 2024, Grimoire is part of the GSC International Screens under the Malaysia Animation Film Festival, celebrating local talent.
This highly anticipated release marks a significant milestone in Jared Lee’s career, further cementing his influence on both Malaysian and international cinema.
A journey through Grimoire
Grimoire intertwines three of Jared Lee’s most acclaimed works—The Last 7, Influencer, and Horologist—to create a meta-narrative that blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction.
The film follows an elderly man who becomes the vessel for these stories, exploring the transformative power of creativity and the resilience needed to overcome doubt and skepticism.
Notably, Horologist made history as the first Malaysian film to win Best Animation at the prestigious San Diego Comic-Con Film Festival in 2023.
Speaking about the project, Jared Lee, founder of Grim Film, shared, “Grimoire represents a culmination of my work and the exploration of creativity amidst challenges.
Each story in the anthology is inspired by experiences with the darker side of human nature.”
Challenges behind Grimoire
Producing Grimoire was no easy feat. Jared described the process as both exhilarating and challenging, with each segment of the film requiring different levels of innovation.
“From the visual effects in The Last 7 to the budgetary constraints of Influencer, each film demanded a different level of originality and resourcefulness.
Nevertheless, it was the dedication of my team that made it all possible, and I am immensely grateful for their persistent support,” Jared said.
The premiere, attended by the cast of Grimoire as well as prominent local celebrities such as Marianne Tan, Joseph Lee, and Yuna, further highlighted the rising prominence of Malaysian talent in the film industry.
Since founding Grim Film in 2011, Jared Lee has gained recognition for his unique storytelling approach, earning numerous accolades from prestigious festivals including Tokyo Short Shorts and LA Shorts International Film Festival.
Jared’s contributions to the local film scene have been nothing short of groundbreaking, with his earlier works like The Long Distance Relationship going viral and setting the stage for his continued influence in the industry.
Reflecting on his journey, Jared remarked, “The past 13 years have been a very challenging journey, and it’s going to be a lot harder from here on. Grimoire is merely the beginning of an arduous path, but despite knowing what lies ahead, the dream chase continues.”
With Grimoire set to run throughout October, cinema-goers can expect to experience a film that not only showcases Jared Lee’s creative genius but also exemplifies the resilience and innovation of Malaysian cinema.
