Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has become the first local council in Sarawak to launch body cameras (bodycams) for its enforcement officers, marking a pivotal step in enhancing public safety, operational transparency, and trust within the community. Unveiled by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian, this initiative underscores Sarawak’s vision of transitioning into a Smart City, where technology serves as the backbone for urban safety and efficiency.
With 10 bodycams deployed under MBKS, the council aims to provide unbiased recordings of officer interactions, offering clarity in disputes and ensuring accountability. The bodycams also protect officers against false claims and streamline investigations with recorded evidence, reinforcing trust between enforcement teams and the public.
MBKS Sets the Benchmark
While 16 of Sarawak’s 24 local councils have begun using body cameras, MBKS stands out for its comprehensive planning and state-of-the-art system. Deputy Premier Dr. Sim expressed hope that other councils would follow MBKS’s example, particularly those still in the process of acquiring bodycams. He noted that standardization of these systems across the state remains a future objective, ensuring uniformity and maximizing benefits.
Dr. Sim also emphasized that adopting such technology not only modernizes enforcement practices but also aligns with Sarawak’s broader digital transformation agenda, highlighting its role in creating safer and more sustainable urban environments.
The advantages of bodycams extend beyond mere surveillance. They encourage respectful interactions, reduce the likelihood of force, and streamline legal proceedings with video evidence. These features promote efficiency while safeguarding the rights of both officers and citizens.
The Deputy Premier also addressed privacy concerns, reassuring the public that the technology is designed to protect all parties involved by providing clear and objective accounts of incidents. He emphasized that bodycams serve not only as tools for enforcement but also as vital instruments for fostering transparency and building trust within the community.
Paving the Way for a Smart Kuching
The bodycam initiative complements other technological advancements in Kuching, such as smart traffic light systems that prioritize ambulances, introduced during last year’s Chinese New Year celebration. These efforts reflect a commitment to transforming Kuching into a smart, net-zero, carbon-neutral city.
Dr. Sim highlighted that 60-70% of Kuching’s traffic lights are now “smart,” demonstrating the city’s readiness for broader technological integration. He expressed optimism that Kuching’s evolution into a Smart City would result in a people-centric urban environment, characterized by safety, sustainability, and innovation.
MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng and other council officials joined the launch ceremony, underscoring the council’s leadership in leveraging technology for community welfare. As Kuching takes this significant step, it sets a benchmark for other cities in Sarawak, paving the way for a safer and smarter urban future.
