World Vision’s Global 6K Run to aid clean water access

Join World Vision Malaysia’s Global 6K for Water on May 18 to raise funds and provide clean water access to vulnerable communities.

In the lead-up to World Water Day on March 22, international aid agency World Vision is encouraging Malaysians to participate in the Global 6K for Water (Global 6K) – a community run aimed at raising awareness and funds for clean water access in vulnerable regions. Since its inception in 2015, the event has expanded worldwide, with Malaysia joining other countries like Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan in hosting the initiative this year.

The Malaysian edition of the Global 6K will take place on May 18, 2025, from 7 am to 11 am at Kepong Metropolitan Park, offering an opportunity for the public to contribute to a vital cause. The funds raised will go toward World Vision’s water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, which focus on improving water sources, enhancing sanitation facilities, and promoting safe hygiene practices for sustainable, long-term benefits.

“Children in marginalised communities have to walk, on average, 6 kilometres every day to collect water. By joining the Global 6K, participants will help World Vision bring clean water to those who need it most. Every step you take, is one they won’t have to,” said Terry Leong, CEO of World Vision Malaysia.

Addressing the Global Water Crisis

Globally, 703 million people still lack access to clean drinking water, forcing many – particularly women and children – to travel long distances to collect often contaminated water. This hardship has serious consequences, contributing to malnutrition and life-threatening diseases.

According to World Vision, 1,000 children under the age of five die every day from illnesses caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. Providing clean water not only reduces disease but also allows children to stay in school and empowers women to pursue economic opportunities.

“We are calling on Malaysians to join us and help us deliver clean water to every child who needs it. When you participate in the Global 6K, you help change lives,” Leong added.

World Vision is the leading non-governmental provider of clean water worldwide. Since 2016, the organisation has provided clean water to 28.6 million people and aims to reach an additional 30 million people by 2030.

Global Efforts and Local Impact

Andrew Morley, World Vision International’s President and CEO, highlighted the life-changing effects of clean water, drawing from his experiences in drought-affected regions.

“I’ve seen first-hand in drought-stricken countries like Zambia how access to clean water transforms lives forever. As a keen runner myself, I want to thank each and every person taking part in raising funds by participating in the Global 6K. You are bringing hope and joy to the families we serve, ensuring every child can reach their God-given potential in life,” said Morley.

The Global 6K emphasizes the average distance that children in marginalized areas walk daily to access water. This symbolic event allows participants—whether athletes, casual walkers, or families—to experience and understand the struggle faced by millions worldwide.
