Smugglers and drug traffickers now cross national borders mostly by land instead of by air to evade the authorities,
Bukit Aman Narcotics CID director Noor Rashid Ibrahim said today.
He said the change in modus operandi was detected two years ago.
“The syndicates have been using the land route instead of the air route for the past two years with Singapore as a transit,” he told reporters after closing the Narcotics Seminar.
The five-day seminar, attended by 40 narcotics officers from Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, was to share views and expertise in handling smuggling and drug trafficking problems.
Noor Rashid said that Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand were cooperating closely in monitoring the situation and curbing the problem.
Also present at the closing ceremony were Penang police chief Ayub Yaakob, Thai Narcotics Suppression Bureau Commissioner Police Lt Gen Atitep Panjamanond and Singapore Director Central Narcotics Bureau Ng Boon Gay.
