Penang Hill funicular train to shut down temporarily

The Penang Hill Corporation (PHC) has announced that the funicular service will be closed from 15th to 23rd June 2023 and is set to resume operations on 24th June 2023.

This routine maintenance is part of PHC’s commitment to ensuring the safety and optimal performance of the funicular system.

Scheduled maintenance ensures safety and compliance

Penang Hill Corporation conducts two major scheduled maintenance periods each year for the funicular system, with the assistance of engineers from the funicular manufacturer, Garaventa AG from Switzerland.

These maintenance sessions play a vital role in guaranteeing the system’s reliability and safety. Additionally, PHC carries out regular daily, weekly, and monthly checks, as well as post-operation routine inspections, to ensure continuous compliance with stringent safety standards.

During the closure of the Penang Hill funicular service, visitors are encouraged to explore alternative transportation methods to reach the summit area.

One option is the jeep service operated by the Penang Hill Jeep Service Association, which can be reached at 012-4541255. This service is conveniently located at the Rifle Club Car Park, situated within the Penang Botanic Gardens.

Alternatively, adventurous visitors can choose to hike using the existing trails leading to the peak of Penang Hill.
