Step into the world of illusion: Immersio launches soon

Prepare for a visual and sensory experience as IMMERSIO 2024 takes over GMBB in Kuala Lumpur from 22 November to 22 December.

Organised by the creative collective Filamen, this year’s festival delves into the theme of “Maya”—a Sanskrit term meaning “illusion” or “magic,” with roots that explore Southeast Asia’s deep cultural and historical landscapes through innovative media art.

IMMERSIO: Southeast Asia’s cultural stories come alive

IMMERSIO 2024 highlights a variety of artists and collectives from across Southeast Asia, celebrating the region’s shared heritage and diversity.

Filamen has curated an impressive roster, including collectives like Kapallorek (Perak, Malaysia), Mud Layar (Selangor, Malaysia), GengRambutan (Indonesia), and 084visual (Vietnam).

Each brings their unique vision to life, merging digital media with cultural storytelling.

“The concept of ‘Maya’ allows us to reconnect with our stories and reimagine them through modern technology,” says Filamen’s team.

The exhibition combines history, myth, and environment, creating immersive experiences where visitors can engage with Southeast Asia’s artistic evolution.

Featured artists and upcoming talents

Curated by Koh Kai Ting, the “Maya” exhibition showcases well-known artists like Aw Boon Xin, Cahaya Create, and Kinnara: Desi La (Japan), alongside emerging talents from Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

Another highlight is INYALA, a segment dedicated to showcasing works from students at leading institutions like Multimedia University and Universiti Sains Malaysia, reflecting the voices of the next generation in new media art.

“IMMERSIO 2024 isn’t just a display,” Koh explains. “It’s an exploration and celebration of artistic expression, where artists push boundaries and tell stories in ways that resonate with today’s audiences.”

Set in the bustling creative hub of GMBB, IMMERSIO 2024 offers an accessible entry to immersive art, with early bird tickets priced at RM10 (RM20 for standard admission) and discounted rates for children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
