Sarawakian boxing legend Sapok Biki, who made history as Malaysia’s first Commonwealth Games gold medalist, is the inspiration behind the upcoming film Tumbukan Emas. Directed by Jalot Jeman and produced by Kamek Empun Production (KEP), the film chronicles Sapok’s remarkable journey, from his childhood in Simunjan to his crowning achievement in the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games. The film aims to bring Sapok’s legacy to a new generation, portraying his resilience, determination, and courage through the lens of a fictional boxer.
The film’s lead role will be played by Sarawakian boxing star Daeloniel ‘Kilat Boy’ Mcdelon, who will portray a character whose journey mirrors that of Sapok. Directed by Jalot Jeman, the production promises a powerful narrative rooted in the values that made Sapok a national icon.
An Inspirational Story of Triumph
During the official launch of the film’s production at Grand Margherita Hotel in Kuching, director Jalot emphasized that while the story would be fictionalized, it would remain deeply grounded in Sapok’s legacy. “His victory remains a symbol of resilience, courage, and dedication, inspiring countless Malaysians to pursue their dreams,” said Jalot. The film will showcase the fictional boxer’s path to glory, including key moments such as the climactic final match, which will be shot at Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching.
“With Tumbukan Emas, Kilat Boy and the team aim to inspire audiences across the nation, reminding them of the strength it takes to chase a dream and make history,” Jalot added. The film’s narrative will not only reflect Sapok’s achievements but will also emphasize the importance of perseverance and belief in oneself.
A Celebration of Sarawak’s Culture and Talent
The launch of Tumbukan Emas was graced by Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who commended the filmmakers for celebrating local heroes. “This film is a proud moment for Sarawak. It not only highlights the incredible story of Sapok Biki but also inspires young Malaysians to pursue boxing and other sports,” said Abdul Karim.
The minister reaffirmed the Sarawak government’s commitment to supporting the local film industry, noting that Tumbukan Emas is an example of how cinema can help promote the region’s culture. “I believe those types of films can help tell people more about Sarawak and its history,” he explained, encouraging other filmmakers to explore similar themes.
The ministry has been instrumental in funding and supporting local film projects, further solidifying Sarawak’s growing creative arts sector.
Anticipation Builds for the Film’s Release
Filming for Tumbukan Emas is set to begin in March 2025, with production expected to take 25 days. The film will star acclaimed Malaysian actors Nam Ron, Azhan Rani, and Tony Eusoff, who will play pivotal roles as mentors to the protagonist. Auditions for supporting roles are currently ongoing, and the production team is also scouting for scenic locations that could potentially double as tourist attractions for the film.
The film will showcase Sapok’s early life, highlighting his childhood as a small and quiet boy who was often bullied. Despite his size, he had an innate talent for dodging punches and crumpled paper, a skill that foreshadowed his future as a boxer. His momentous victory at the 1998 Commonwealth Games, where he defeated Moses Kinyra, an African champion known as the “Muhammad Ali of Kenya,” remains a proud moment in Malaysia’s sports history.
The film will premiere on July 22, in celebration of Sarawak Day, and is expected to be shown in cinemas nationwide, with a goal of reaching an audience of 1 million viewers.
The Future of Sarawak’s Film Industry
As Sarawak continues to foster its film industry, Minister Abdul Karim emphasized the importance of local productions like Tumbukan Emas in helping the industry grow. He urged more filmmakers to step forward, creating documentaries and other productions that showcase Sarawak’s rich history and culture. The continued support from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts is seen as crucial for the industry’s further development.
Jalot Jeman echoed the minister’s sentiments, sharing that Tumbukan Emas would not only be a celebration of Sapok’s life but also a chance to explore and introduce the natural beauty and heritage of Sarawak through the art of filmmaking.
