Miss World 2019 hopes to be the ‘Beauty with a Purpose’

LONDON – Malaysia’s very own Alexis Sue Ann did the country proud by advancing to the Top 40

Newly crowned Miss World 2019, Toni-Ann Singh said the biggest part of the competition is the charity work done by winners. Speaking of the charity called Beauty With A Purpose, which was set up in 1971 that has raised over a billion dollars for deprived communities around the world.

The Miss Jamaica beat Ophely Mezino of France and Suman Rao of India who finished first and second runners up respectively. She is now the fourth Jamaican to win the title after Carole Joan Crawford in 1963, Cindy Breakspeare in 1976 and Lisa Hanna in 1993.

Toni graduated from Florida State University with a degree in women’s studies and psychology and is an talented classical opera singer. The 23-year-old who was born in Jamaica’s Morant Bay, settled in Florida with her family at the age of nine.

This is the first time in history that top pageants such as Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss America, Miss Universe and Miss World have all crowned black women as winners in the same year.

More than 100 contestants competed for several weeks in London, taking part in six different preliminary rounds. The main event on Saturday introduced all of the contestants in a large opening number where each danced in their national costumes.

Malaysia’s very own Alexis Sue Ann showcased our cultural dance in a beautiful Langkawi Kebaya Labuh costume. She also did the country proud by advancing to the Top 40.
