Ipoh-born actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh made history as the first Malaysian to win an Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.
The 61-year-old actress took home the prize for Best Actress for her role in “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. She outshone other nominees, including Cate Blanchett, Ana de Armas, Andrea Riseborough, and Michelle Williams.
In response to her incredible achievement, the mayor of Ipoh, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, announced plans to induct personalities from Ipoh into a hall of fame, including Yeoh.
Speaking at a press conference at Taman Meru Emas, he said, “We are thinking of setting up a hall of fame, in which we will include her. We are also looking at inducting other famous personalities from Ipoh.”
According to Rumaizi, Yeoh has been an unofficial “influencer” for Ipoh.
“We hope her success will attract domestic and international tourists to visit our city,” he said.
The city has already taken several initiatives to attract more visitors, including refurbishing Ipoh’s heritage buildings and promoting its famous street food. Ipoh has also been named one of Lonely Planet’s top 10 Asian destinations in 2022.
