Penangites are eagerly anticipating the launch of the new fleet of ferries, which aims to enhance transportation connectivity and alleviate traffic congestion in the region.
The four new ferries, costing RM80 million, will commence operations on August 7, offering free rides for a month. This initiative by the Penang government is expected to provide a seamless commuting experience and ensure the convenience of both locals and visitors.
Easing traffic congestion and affordable fares
The introduction of the new ferries is met with enthusiasm by Mohd Khairolhaswadi Hasbullah, a financial consultant in Butterworth. He told Bernama that the new ferries will have a positive impact on traffic congestion on the Penang Bridge.
Expressing gratitude for the government’s initiative, he recognizes the significance of the ferries for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists. The new ferries not only offer a touch of nostalgia but also present a valuable opportunity to enhance the transportation landscape in Penang.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke shares in the optimism surrounding the new ferries. He emphasizes their potential to ease congestion and provide an affordable commuting solution for the public.
Although the fares for the new ferries are yet to be determined, the government assures that they will be reasonable and within reach for all. This commitment to affordable fares aims to incentivize the public to embrace the new ferries as their preferred mode of transportation.
By offering affordable fares, the Penang government aims to encourage widespread usage of the new ferries, reducing reliance on the Penang Bridge and mitigating traffic congestion. The convenient and cost-effective transportation alternative is expected to bring significant benefits to both commuters and the environment.
Enhanced safety and improved experience
Engineered in the Netherlands, Penang’s new ferries prioritize passenger safety and comfort. Each ferry has a capacity of accommodating 150 passengers and 50 motorcycles or bicycles. Notably, one of the ferries is exclusively designated for pedestrians, ensuring a safer environment for those traveling on foot.
To further enhance safety measures, the ferries are equipped with CCTV cameras, fire detectors, and real-time monitoring equipment, providing passengers with peace of mind throughout their journey.
The Penang government is prioritizing the safety of passengers by installing advanced features such as closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, fire detectors, and real-time monitoring equipment. These measures will provide a secure environment for passengers throughout their journey. Additionally, the dedicated ferry for pedestrians will create a safer space for those traveling on foot.
During the initial four-week trial period, both residents and tourists in Penang will have the opportunity to enjoy complimentary ferry rides, as well as a free shuttle service connecting the Raja Tun Uda Base (PRTU – Swettenham Pier cruise terminal) and Sultan Abdul Halim Base (PSAH) in Butterworth.
The newly introduced ferry service in Penang is set to operate from 6 am to 8:30 pm, ensuring extended hours of transportation convenience for commuters. During peak times, the ferries will operate at a frequency of every 30 minutes, allowing for efficient and timely travel experiences. Notably, the one-way trip duration has been significantly reduced to just 10 minutes, in contrast to the previous 20-minute journey on the old ferries.
The introduction of the new Penang ferries signifies a significant step toward alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing transportation options in the region. Penangites can look forward to a month of free ferry rides, enabling them to experience the convenience and benefits of this sustainable mode of commuting.
