Smart lampposts set to propel Ipoh towards 5G future

Ipoh City is gearing up for a technological transformation with the Ipoh City Council’s (MBI) ambitious plan to deploy 36 integrated smart lampposts.

Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin emphasised that the lampposts’ construction will be privately financed, and the installation will be handled by a licensed Network Facilities Provider Individual (NFPi).

This initiative aligns with the vision of Ipoh Smart City 2030, positioning 5G as a vital component of modern life and a catalyst for attracting foreign investment to the city.

Smart lampposts for Ipoh

Mayor Datuk Rumaizi Baharin disclosed the Ipoh City Council’s strategic move towards a technologically advanced future.

The 36 integrated smart lampposts, slated for full installation by 2027, signify a significant step in expanding the 5G technology network in Ipoh.

The funding for these smart poles will be entirely covered by the Private Financing Initiative, ensuring financial sustainability for the project.

Rumaizi highlighted the critical role of the 5G telecommunications network in contemporary life, underscoring its contribution to realising the Ipoh Smart City 2030 vision.

Boosting the city’s economy

Rumaizi detailed the operational structure of the initiative, explaining that parties possessing the NFPi licence will handle the construction of the smart poles.

Once completed, these poles will be leased to a telecommunications company for providing frequency signals.

Additionally, the NFPi will pay a monthly rental fee to the MBI for the designated construction areas.

Beyond convenience for residents, Rumaizi stressed that this initiative aims to attract foreign investment to Ipoh.

The opening up of more spaces for foreign investment is envisioned to boost the city’s economy and create employment opportunities for the local population.

Ipoh Timur member of parliament Howard Lee Chuan How echoed the importance of detailed information sessions related to the smart lampposts’ construction.

Addressing concerns about potential health effects, he emphasised the need to communicate the initiative’s significance and benefits thoroughly.

Lee regarded it as crucial to dispel worries among the public, citing the initiative as a vital government agenda for income growth and national development.
