The entertainment industry mourns the untimely demise of veteran Hong Kong actress Violet Lee Ying, who passed away at the age of 70 after a fall at her Vancouver residence. The news was confirmed by fellow actress Wong Shuk Yee, currently in Vancouver, who revealed that Hong Kong-based Malaysian actress Angie Cheong was by Violet’s side during her final moments on February 25.
Violet Lee Ying, known for her illustrious career in the ’70s and her unforgettable roles in numerous TV dramas, had recently been in Hong Kong for Chinese New Year. The suddenness of her passing has left friends and family in shock, as Violet had been in good health and had even made plans to meet with friends on February 26.
Violet Lee Ying’s Final Days
Wong Shuk Yee recounted the last few days before Violet’s demise, noting that the veteran actress had dismissed the severity of her fall, attributing it to a simple sprain. Despite concerns from friends who offered assistance, Violet insisted she was fine and declined their invitations.
Disturbingly, when friends went to check on her upon being unable to reach her, they found Violet unwell, with unclear speech and facial bruises. Paramedics were immediately called, and Angie Cheong was notified. Despite their efforts, Violet could not be revived, and she was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Legacy of a TVB Icon
Violet Lee Ying, who made her debut in the ’70s alongside Mary Hon and Damian Lau, was a prominent figure in TVB. Her notable works include the 1994 hit drama “Class of Distinction” alongside Leon Lai, Jessica Hsuan, and Louis Koo. After marrying businessman Shen Haijian in 1984 and relocating to Canada, the couple divorced eight years later.
Violet’s legacy lives on through her two daughters. Her elder daughter, Winnie Shum, followed in her mother’s footsteps, entering the entertainment industry after participating in the 2004 Miss Hong Kong pageant. She later chose a different path, becoming a flight attendant.
In 2003, Violet returned to Hong Kong, marking her acting comeback with roles in ViuTV’s “Sorina Fok” and Radio Television Hong Kong’s “Stories of Lion Rock Spirit”. As the industry mourns the loss of a seasoned talent, Angie Cheong, who shared a close bond with Violet, is left to cherish the memories of their final moments together.
