Bacfree, a leader in Malaysia’s water solutions sector, has achieved the SIRIM 55:2023 ESG certification, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to sustainability.

The certification, awarded at the Majlis SIRIM Industri 2024 event, recognises Bacfree’s role in advancing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards within the water industry.

The event was attended by Datuk Bahria Mohd Tamil, Deputy Secretary General (Investment & Management) of the Ministry of Investment, Trade, and Industry (MITI), who underscored MITI’s support for local companies embracing sustainable practices.

Founded in 1982, Bacfree has transformed the water industry with its innovative filtration and rainwater harvesting solutions.

As Southeast Asia’s largest provider of rainwater harvesting systems, Bacfree serves thousands of residential, commercial, and industrial clients across Malaysia, collecting over 55 million cubic meters of rainwater annually.

These efforts contribute to a reduction of around 31,416 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year, supporting environmental conservation and resource efficiency.

Dr. Chee Chung Yee, Bacfree’s technical director, emphasised the company’s commitment to sustainable innovation.

“The ESG Management system will be our corporate compass going forward. This certification will anchor our brand value and propel us to the next level of growth.

Additionally, through collaboration with Monash University, Bacfree has invested in research and development to create patented rainwater harvesting systems tailored for Malaysia’s tropical climate.

Bacfree’s impact extends beyond product innovation. As an ESG-certified company, it collaborates with government bodies, local authorities, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to promote responsible water management.

Bacfree’s team has also completed training in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) accounting, enabling them to design solutions that support clients’ sustainability goals and help reduce Scope 3 upstream emissions.

For businesses using Bacfree’s systems, the company provides CO₂ emissions data that may qualify clients for Malaysia’s Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA), a support mechanism that promotes sustainability goals through 2026.

Bacfree has also made strides in reducing plastic waste in the hospitality industry by offering under-counter filtration systems that eliminate the need for single-use plastic and glass bottles.

“The SIRIM 55:2023 ESG Management Systems award is a commendable achievement for Malaysian companies like Bacfree, highlighting their dedication to sustainability and aligning with national goals for a greener economy,” said Datuk Bahria.

MITI’s Datuk Bahria commended Bacfree’s leadership in sustainable business, stating, “Their efforts not only contribute to a stronger economy and a healthier environment but also support Malaysia’s vision for a sustainable future, setting a benchmark for others to follow.”

The SIRIM 55:2023 ESG certification is part of SIRIM’s new Holistic Ecosystem initiative, launched to support Malaysian companies in achieving ESG objectives through comprehensive training, certification, and consultancy services.

This system aims to advance Malaysia’s green economy by enabling more businesses to implement sustainable practices that align with global standards.

With the SIRIM certification, Bacfree exemplifies a commitment to ESG principles in water management, setting a model for other companies to follow in meeting their own sustainability targets.
