Sungai Buloh flood projects worth nearly RM700 million must be sped up. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said so on Tuesday. Selangor, meanwhile, has approved RM800,000 for quick fixes in Shah Alam and Klang.
Anwar spoke to reporters after visiting the relief centre at Dewan Siantan in Kampung Melayu Subang. The village was among the areas hit by floods on Monday.
Here is what Anwar ordered, why the area needs it and what happens next.
What Anwar ordered

Anwar said the area had flooded two or three times. So, he said, the rivers need widening and more retention ponds.
He told officials to speed up the Sungai Buloh and Sungai Damansara flood mitigation projects. The federal government has already approved the cost of nearly RM700 million. In short, the money is there and the priority is speed.
Both projects come in two phases. Today they are between 30 and 60 per cent complete. Anwar said the dredging must move faster, since those contracts are already awarded.
In addition, he promised extra aid for flood victims. The amount will be set with the state government, based on each family’s damage.
Anwar will receive a progress report on the federal Sungai Buloh flood projects this Friday. At the same time, he said the work must go ahead without delay to cut the risk of more floods.
Why Sungai Buloh needs the work

Heavy rain on 2 November left floodwater 0.3 to 0.6 metres deep in three places. They were Jalan Jati, Kampung Melayu Subang and Kampung Kubu Gajah. Sungai Buloh MP Datuk Seri R. Ramanan said more than 500 homes were affected.
At 11am on Tuesday, 30 people from eight families were still at the Dewan Siantan relief centre, according to Bernama. Ramanan said the centre will stay open for as long as needed. Meanwhile, he urged residents to follow the authorities’ instructions.
In addition, the Petaling District and Land Office, Shah Alam City Council and Social Welfare Department are helping residents.
Volunteers from the Sungai Buloh parliamentary service centre also work alongside them. But the village has flooded before. It was also hit in April 2024, October 2024 and February 2026.
What Selangor is doing

Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari joined Anwar at the relief centre. Amirudin said Anwar agreed to speed up ongoing work. The priority is deepening Sungai Damansara, so water flows better and spills into fewer homes.
So the state will review its own projects, including unfinished contracts awarded as early as 2015. On Friday, Amirudin meets the Irrigation and Drainage Department to review progress in Kampung Melayu Subang.
Separately, the state has approved RM800,000 for immediate works. They cover the i-City junction in Shah Alam and Taman Rashna in Klang. The works include pumps, and Amirudin said they could finish as early as December.
State infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim linked the flooding to a missing water gate. The gate would lead to Sungai Rasah. However, a detention pond in Taman Rashna is under consideration.
Still, bigger fixes take time. The federal government has approved RM40 million for longer-term works covering Bukit Raja and i-City. But that plan is still at the design stage.
