The police are ready to face new approaches according to the requirements and needs, in lieu of the government’s intended repeal of the Internal Security Act, said Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar.
On Sept 15, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak announced the abolition of the Restricted Residence Act 1933 and the Banishment Act 1959.
Ismail said the new approaches would present new challenges to the police.
“We can’t afford to look back now or compare with previous performances. We need to face the reality,” he said at a police awards presentation ceremony at the Wangsa Maju police station yesterday.
His speech text was read by his deputy, Khalid Abu Bakar.
Ismail hoped the formulation of the New Remuneration Scheme for Civil Servants (SBPA) to replace the existing remuneration system (SSM) would improve productivity, creativity and innovation among policemen.
“It is clear that this new evaluation is more focused and has strong justification,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ismail said the police seized an assortment of drugs worth about RM204 million between January and last month.
During that period, he said 30 drug processing laboratories were crippled as compared to 20, during the same period last year.
